{detailed description}This book tells the story of one of the longest serving airfields in East Anglia from 1918 until its official closure in 1962. During the Second World War RAF Bircham Newton was, with its satellites at Docking and Langham, one of the major Coastal Command airfields covering the east coast.
The aerodrome was in the front line protecting convoys and launching offensive operations and air-sea rescue patrols. Constantly under the threat of Luftwaffe attack, the airfield became a welcome landfall for stricken aircraft returning from operations over enemy territory.
Situated near Sandringham House the station enjoyed royal associations over several decades witnessing the comings and goings of three generations of monarchs.
Packed with painstaking detail and vivid eyewitness accounts from veterans and many previously unpublished illustrations, the book has taken ten years to complete.
Since 1966 Bircham Newton has been the training centre of the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and in appearance still remains one of the best preserved airfields in the country.
