{detailed description}Marshal of the Royal Air Force Sir Arthur T. Harris was unquestionably one of the greatest operational commanders of World War II. and probably the least honoured. As Commander-in-Chief of Bomber Command from 1942-1945 he was a forceful, effective and highly controversial figure, and that controversy was to stay with him long after the War ended. This book is his official life, written with his full consent and cooperation by one of his own officers.
Harris's entire life was one devoted to the belief that the air arm was the single most effective weapon in any modern war. At the zenith of his career he was to prove this repeatedly, carrying the war nightly to an enemy otherwise unaffected by the puny efforts of the other service arms. His reward was a belittling of his vast achievement, and a shabby appraisal of the courage, tenacity and effectiveness of the Command he loved. Here, for the first time, are the facts about the part played by Bomber Command, based upon extensive research into German records (including Albert Speer's personal documents), and into Swiss Intelligence and Diplomatic records, in addition to the records of the RAF, the Cabinet Office, and the personal papers of Harris and those who served with him.
This is the story of one man, and of the development and proving of a weapon of supreme importance. The author gives the lie to other accounts born of political expediency, and to the 'easy speeches' that have contributed to the inexplicable effort to denigrate Harris's decisive contribution to the Allied victory. This is at once a fascinating and exciting study of a full life devoted to the service of this country, and a fitting and moving, though sadly belated, tribute to a man upon whose skill and judgement depended the lives and freedom of millions.
