{detailed description}'Mr. C. G. Grey, who knows more about the history of aeroplanes and the development of Aeronautics than any other living journalist, has produced a valuable companion volume to British Fighter Planes . . . The evolution of the bomber makes a fascinating story . . . the book is of equal value both to the layman and to the expert.'—Sphere.
Bombers are the artillery of the air, just as fighters are the cavalry of the air. But there is this big difference between the bombers and the artillery, that the bombers cannot be effective unless they put themselves well within reach of enemy attack. So they get their full share of fighting. And the stories of their fights are as stirring as the stories of great sea-fights.
In this companion volume to British Fighter Planes Mr. Grey, for many years editor of The Aeroplane, tells how bombers have been used, and sometimes misused, by the various belligerents in the present war. He describes the evolution of bombers as types of aircraft quite distinct from fighters. He also gives the history, often truly romantic, of the firms which have specialized in making bombers both here and abroad.
There is added interest in bombers because when peace comes, almost all that we have learned about the design and construction of bombers can be used in the building of long-distance high-speed transport machines. Rudyard Kipling's motto for his imagined Aerial Board of Control reads—'Transportation is Civilization'. Something will be said on this subject too, for Civil Air Transport, in aircraft of bomber capacity, has played a great part in this war.
