{detailed description}Dating back to 1797, Boulton & Paul were well established in the fields of iron-founding and wood-working when called upon to enter the aircraft manufacturing business during the First World War. Once the war was over, sub-contracts for aircraft manufacturing were no longer available. The company then decided to construct aircraft of their own design. Contracts for military aircraft were won from the Air Ministry and civil aeroplanes were designed and constructed also, but with only limited success.
With the approach of the Second World War, the aircraft division of Boulton & Paul was hived off and amalgamated with Aircraft Technical Services to form Boulton-Paul Aircraft, and a new factory was built in Wolverhampton.
With the return of peace, Boulton-Paul Aircraft became involved with research; unfortunately, sub-contract work became more difficult and the company was taken over in 1961. However, Boulton & Paul of Norwich continues to expand after the departure of the aircraft division.
This is the story of a company spanning almost two hundred years and of their achievements within the history of aviation.
