{detailed description}Wing Commander Nigel Tangye, now a serving officer in the R.A.F., was already an experienced pilot before the outbreak of war and had practical knowledge of the difficulties and dilemmas of those who, realising the vital importance of our development in the air, were faced with official apathy. As a practical pilot, with peace-time and war-time experience of flying, Wing Commander Tangye is well qualified to write the story of Britain in the Air.
It is a story full of surprises. Everyone knows the mythological origins of man's attempts to fly, the story of Daedalus and Icarus, they know, too, of Roger Bacon's prophesies and da Vinci's sketches for a flying machine. But few people realise what a tremendous advance towards practical flight was made by Sir George Cayley as early as 1808 and few appreciate the work done by John Stringfellow, William Henson and P. S. Pilcher. Again, everyone has heard of Montgolfier's balloon, but few know that the Channel was first crossed by air in 1785 by two balloonists, a Frenchman and an American.
The story of man's flight is the story of one of his most remarkable achievements and every day brings new developments. It is largely an international story in which Britain has played a not inconsiderable part.
