Here presented for the first time are individual descriptions and histories of the different types of aeroplanes, and the seventeen airships, designed and constructed in Great Britain between 1809 and the outbreak of war in August, 1914.
The authoritative text, which is accompanied by 504 photographs and 106 three-view drawings, examines the various machines, both conventional and extremely unorthodox, which were used by the early British pioneers, from Sir George Cayley onwards, to lay the foundations of Britain's prowess in the air. All types are recorded--gliders and powered, from monoplanes to multi-planes, ornithopters, seaplanes, flying-boats and helicopters. The introduction surveys the development of flying in the British Isles during the period, which is covered also by a useful chronology. This is the first time that such a comprehensive record has been made of one country's pioneer aircraft, and it will prove to be an important addition to British aeronautical literature.
