{detailed description}During the First World War Britain was faced with the problem of converting the activities of the aviation pioneers into a major industry producing tens of thousands of aircraft to meet the urgent requirements of the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service and, subsequently, the newly-formed Royal Air Force. In this work Harald Penrose traces in great detail this dramatic story and displays it against a background of devastating war, almost equally devastating politics, and revolutionary social change. He describes the design, development and production of some of the world's best known aircraft such as the Sopwith Pup and Camel, the S.E.5a, the Bristol Fighter, the D.H.9A, the great twin-engined Handley Page 0/100 bomber, the Short and Fairey seaplanes, as well as some of the less known and even bizarre types. Equally important is his coverage of the trials involved in producing suitable engines, for, in general, the rate of aircraft development was strictly controlled by the availability of sufficiently powerful and reliable engines. Having built a vast industry during the years of war, the great figures of British aviation were faced, when peace came, with the problem of survival. Penrose tells of their efforts, which included publicity flights and first tentative steps in building a civil air transport system, and it was only because they succeeded that Britain with- stood the attacks of the Luftwaffe in 1940. This great chronicle of war is complete in itself, but it continues the story of the beginnings of flight told in Harald Penrose's earlier work British Aviation: the Pioneer Years.
