{detailed description}In 1918 there were well over 300 military airfields in the UK and by the end of World War 2 there were almost 700. Today there are less than 50 active airfields and only half of these house major front line units. Through the medium of photographs British Military Airfields: Then & Now traces the development of military aviation in this country from the growth of the first airfields and the early years of the RAF, through World War 2 and the Battle of Britain and the Bomber campaign, up to today's major airfields shaped by the Cold War era.
The greatest user of airfields in this country has been the RAF but this book does not neglect its predecessors. It also looks at the history of the air services of the Army and the Navy as well as the long postwar involvement of the United States Air Force in this country's military aviation history, starting with the arrival of the USAAF in 1942. Airfields still in use feature prominently but also the famous names from the past are shown here — airfields now closed or no longer used by the armed forces — as well as the people who worked on them and the magnificent and fascinating aircraft which flew from them. Even the unsung airfields which none the less have performed vital functions such as training and maintenance are included. The book concludes with appendices listing all military airfields in use in 1918 and current military airfields.
With its superb selection of photographs British Military Airfields: Then & Now is a fascinating account of the history and development of military aviation in this country.{Author / Publisher / Date}by Leo Marriott
