{detailed description}Charles E. Brown The aeroplane photographs of Charles E. Brown must be considered as a major historic document. As a Press photographer who grew up in the very practical world of newspapers and who learnt his skills from commerce, it is surprising to find, in the thousands of photographs he produced, so many images of brilliant clarity so deftly balanced by careful composition and an immaculate choice of environment. In his formative years he learnt to identify with a camera, so much so that he used the same Palmos camera throughout the thirty or so years he was engaged in aerial photography. Having chosen his camera and learnt its eccentricities he was then able to achieve the remarkable degree of technical skill evident in the wonderfully clear images presented in this book. The surface textures of his subjects are so well captured by his ability, it seems that they are still real. Charles E. Brown used his intuition wisely and took not only the staged and expected aeroplane portraits, but also managed to capture and transmit the real drama of space and light, intrinsic facets of the breathtaking world above the clouds.
