{detailed description}This Chinese aircraft register is the culmination of nineteen years research into one of the world's most secretive aviation countries, especially prior to 1980.
Compiling the information accurately has been frustrating and many conflicting reports have had to be painstakingly checked, often leading to more questions being raised without a satisfactory answer.
The registrations in this book might appear to be neat and tidy, but behind some entries we have found some fake or temporary numbers which have been difficult to trace. Fortunately, we believe that most of the fake identities are now accounted for which has involved Tridents, II-18s and Li-2s.
It was not until the late 1980s that CAAC were forced to take an interest in delivery dates, albeit a small interest and only with major airliners operating from western lease companies. It is virtually impossible to specify dates by day, so month and year are consistent throughout this book.
Every Chinese registered aircraft is the property of CAAC, who, through financial arrangements allow the various regions to operate the aircraft in its regional colours or airline markings. Overriding this, CAAC control all aviation matters within the country and hundreds of departments within CAAC each play a role in the structure of civil, military, government and general aviation.
Particular attention has been paid to the actual operator within these pages, not just listed as CAAC even though some aircraft carry the basic CAAC markings.
