{detailed description}This is a story of pioneer aircraft and pilots, of classic First World War machines, of fascinating civil and military prototypes between the wars, of the Moth and the birth of the light aeroplane movement, and of historic long-distance flights. It tells the history of the Mosquito, of jet-fighter development, and of the mighty Comet.
The Author covers in detail all de Havilland military and civil aircraft from the D.H.1 pusher biplane to the D.H.121 Trident jet airliner. He also gives a fully illustrated introductory section on Sir Geoffrey de Havilland's earlier experimental aeroplanes, and the book concludes with an illustrated appendix dealing with the products of the Australian and Canadian companies.
Over 60 important types are described in detail, with origin and development, operational history of individual aircraft, three-view drawings and specifications of all variants. Aircraft which did not go beyond the prototype stage are also fully illustrated and described, unbuilt de Havilland projects being listed in full with a maximum of surviving data.
This book has been written with the full assistance of the de Havilland company and includes a wealth of hitherto unpublished detail from the author's private archives and those of historians and societies in all parts of the world.
