{detailed description}While PSL's Encyclopaedia of the Modern Royal Air Force deals principally with organization and equipment, this companion volume concentrates solely on the 67 front-line RAF Squadrons currently in service in Britain and around the world.
From the early days of the Royal Flying Corps in the years immediately prior to the First World War to the modern trimmed but still formidable high-technology force, the RAF has undergone many changes. Yet the system of organization by Squadron has stood the test of time — it is a simple command structure which also engenders a very special esprit de corps and a sense of belonging to a close-knit unit.
A history of each Squadron is given here, concentrating especially on its role and the aircraft flown during its active years. Emphasis is also given to those aspects of each Squadron which make it unique, since it is this uniqueness that differentiates an operational Squadron from other units and helps to fuel the intense loyalty felt by both past and present members. Other details include the Squadron badge and motto, Standard and Battle Honours, affiliations and nicknames, and a description of aircraft insignia and markings from the formation of the Squadron to the present day.
Some Squadrons were never to find themselves in the limelight, while others have been distinguished by actions of great daring and courage, from individual heroism in the 'dogfights' of the First World War to the exploits of the now almost legendary Dambuster' No 617 Squadron in the Second. All are surveyed here in a book that will form an essential part of any aviation enthusiast's or historian's collection.
Chris Ashworth joined the Royal Air Force straight from school and during his 32-year career with the service flew Shackletons operationally in Coastal Command before becoming a flying instructor and finally serving on Nimrod maritime reconnaissance aircraft.
