{detailed description}`I have grown with the F-111 and have seen its bag-of-tricks grow to make it a more versatile weapons system. We have been hindered in the past with World War II-type weapons, but development is now catching up with the tremendous leap in aircraft technology. New weapons are now entering service that can take advantage of the F-111's capabilities. With the upgrades planned and the new weaponry being developed, the F-111 will continue in useful service for a long time to come.'
These are words from the foreword to this book by Captain Brad Insley, who has flown more than 4,000 hours in the 'Aardvark' and surely knows the plane as well as any man can. He would recognize the aircraft as one which, despite being initially beset by the political infighting and changing defence requirements that seem to trouble every aviation advance, has become a sophisticated airborne weapons system with awesome power and impressive diversity. He knew it when it was considered too expensive, found to be too heavy for the carrier role once planned for it, and liable, because of its solo night missions, to suffer losses that could not be verified or explained.
Above all, he and his colleagues have come to admire the aircraft that has achieved success in action over a long operational history, from Vietnam to the Libyan mission.
Too many books on modern aviation leave the inquisitive reader asking questions, particularly on matters relating to the hi-tech systems that make the modern warplane the power it is. The authors of this volume have a proven record of explaining the complex technologies of avionics in language the layman can understand, interweaving weaponry evolution with combat accounts to offer a broader perspective to the reader. This outstanding study of the F-111 fighter-bomber shows a fine understanding of the needs of the aviation student and is a major contribution to modern military literature.
