{detailed description}Fighter Command was created in 1936 as the premier air defence of Britain and remained as such until it was merged into the present RAF Strike Command in 1968. In the early part of the Second World War, under Lord Dowding, especially during the Battle of Britain, it fulfilled its primary function in superb manner, by nullifying all attempts to reduce the nation to a state in which it might have been easily invaded and occupied. Then Fighter Command played a major role in the offensive air war, striking back in ever-increasing strength and tenacity until Hitler was defeated.
Although not intended as a full history or all-embracing record of every activity and achievement, this book traces the background, development, successes, failures, and — not least — obstacles overcome by Fighter Command throughout its relatively brief existence as a separate force. Within the narrative special emphasis is laid upon the fighter pilots themselves, and personal individual accounts add evocative word-pictures to a lucidly-written panoramic review of the RAF's fighter arm.
The result is a sincere study and appreciation of a body of young men whose prowess and sacrifices helped largely in preserving a birthright of freedom for future generations; a fitting tribute to three generations of some of Britain's finest youth.
