{detailed description}Here are some of the best flying tales published in the famous "Blackwood's Magazine" during the last fifty years. They begin with an account of the Hon. Alan Boyle building his own primitive aeroplane, and then finding out at Brooklands whether he-and the machine-could fly. They continue with tales from the Royal Flying Corps, Royal Naval Air Service, and later the R.A.F. and the Fleet Air Arm. They end with the pilots' personal stories of research and record-breaking flights over the North Pole and the Atlantic, and a hair-raising description of testing rocket-propelled aircraft.
" Here are displayed," says the Chief of the Air Staff in his Foreword, " without ostentation, the traditional British virtues-love of adventure, endurance in adversity, and an irrepressible sense of humour . . . this book must appeal to all, and will bring pleasure and entertainment to everyone who reads it, be he layman or expert."
