{detailed description}This is a complete record of the ancestry, formation and disbandment of all flying units of the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Air Force. It spans the period from April 1912 to April 1998 and provides a detailed history of individual flying units of the Royal Flying Corps, Royal Air Force (including post WWI Coastal Flights and research establishments), Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Air Force Catapult Flights and Squadrons (to May 1939) and joint Army/Royal Air Force formations.
Squadrons have been the subject of previous publications but no attempt has previously been made to link in allocated and displayed unit aircraft codes. A substantial proportion of the content examines in detail those units which have, in the past, only received a fleeting mention. Extensive cross-referencing correctly identifies many of the 3800 units, which either made subtle changes to their title or were popularly referred to by an incorrect rather than their official designation. Post-war Station Flights and Maintenance Units are also included in order to list allocated code letters.
