{detailed description}This book records in intimate detail the formative years of the Fokker company and tells, more than any other history, the story of the men and the aircraft whose work and achievements made that company one of the greatest aircraft companies in the world. Most important, it does belated honour to Reinhold Platz, the man who designed the best of the Fokker aircraft of the 1914-18 war period and the most famous of the Fokker transport monoplanes. The development of the earlier Fokker aeroplanes, their successes and failures, are told in authentic detail, and the text corrects many erroneous beliefs and sets many records straight. The numerous illustrations come from the collections of the author and other historians, and many have never previously been published. The author, after a period as Permanent Assistant to the Professor of Aeronautical Engineering at the Technical University, Berlin, worked in the German Defence Ministry as well as editing an aeronautical journal, until his arrest by the Nazis in 1933. He escaped to England and began a new career as test pilot, manager of a small aircraft firm and engineering consultant. He died in 1959. The book was edited by J M Bruce, author of British Aeroplanes, 1914-1918 and The Aeroplanes of the Royal Flying Corps, and an acknowledged authority on Great War aviation. The reprint of this book, which is a great collector's item and has been almost unobtainable in recent years, will be widely welcomed.
