{detailed description}Gate Guards. Where did they go? North American built thousands of F-86 Sabres, Boeing built nearly 900 C-97 Stratofreighters and tankers, Grumman produced thousands of S-2 Trackers and so the list goes on. Where are they all now? Scrapped mostly, or in storage awaiting disposal.
There can be few air bases this side of the Iron Curtain that do not possess a gate guard — an old aircraft, usually positioned near the base entrance, in varying conditions of repair and often `up a pole'. The latter being an attempt to portray the aircraft in its normal flying attitude and often limited only be the imagination of the people responsible for the display. In the case of the B-47 and B-52 preserved at the Oklahoma City State Fair Grounds, or some of the aircraft preserved in Pakistan, some people are more imaginative than others. Here is a collection of more than 130 colour photographs of gate guards from all over the world, with the majority from the USA and Great Britain. A book to delight enthusiasts, modellers and aviation historians.
