{detailed description}This is the thrilling story of the important role played by some of the women ferry pilots of the war-time Air Transport Auxiliary who delivered all types of aircraft from factory assembly lines to Royal Air Force stations. The courage and efficiency with which they performed their chosen tasks were vital to the success of operational units from the early days of the Battle of Britain to D-Day and the subsequent end of the war in Europe.
Alison King gives an interesting account of the growth of the organisation, and skilful portraits of the pilots both on duty and off. She gives a clear idea of the success of these women who, drawn together by their eagerness to fly, were determined to take an equal share of the duties undertaken by the men of the A.T.A. and live up to the exacting standards required of them.
