{detailed description}The firm that produced the Hurricane was formed shortly after the First World War by the late Harry Hawker to carry on the business of the Sopwith company at Kingston-on-Thames. Sydney Camm became Chief Designer soon afterwards and it was under his direction that the Horsley bomber was introduced into service with the R.A.F. in 1927.
In 1930 the Hart went into service with the R.A.F., and in the following year the Fury. From these famous biplanes springs the line of world-beating fighters that includes the Hurricane and Hunter.
In this book, F. K. Mason traces the history of the company's development, and then examines each distinct Hawker aircraft type ever flown, with photographs and three-view drawings. Production data and service allocation of individual aircraft are fully recorded. Appendices give further material on unfinished projects and Hawker test pilots.
This is the first of a series of volumes which will present the whole output of the great British aircraft manufacturers—an invaluable contribution to aviation history. Mr Mason has had full co-operation from Hawker's, and access to private archives, test pilots' reports, company records, and Martlesham Heath reports. More than 380 photographs complement this unique record of a famous firm's output.
