{detailed description}Here is the true story of the three years of peace leading up to the outbreak of the Second World War, as seen through the eyes of a young RAF pilot who was still only twenty when the war broke out.
Although in decline, the British Empire still offered young men opportunities for adventure and travel. Life was more relaxed, aircraft were slower — and as you will find out — what was ostensibly a forced landing practice in a farmer's field, could in reality be an excuse to gather mushrooms for breakfast. Many squadron commanders allowed their pilots to take aircraft away on weekend leave, to land at the aerodrome nearest to their home and with an open cockpit and the necessity for 'teddy bear' flying suits — who could tell between a radio operator or the pilot's girlfriend?
This book is written in a light-hearted vein but, in the knowledge that when the storm broke in 1939, it was the young men portrayed in this book who took the brunt of Hitler's onslaught.

(The book also reveals the origin of the author's nick-name "Dopey"!)
