{detailed description}While the popular imagination is caught by dramatic achievements in the realms of supersonic and space flight, the many worthwhile accomplishments in less spectacular branches of aviation are too often overlooked. The purpose of this book is to give the intending student, and some parents too, perhaps, an insight into the design problems involved in the production of two highly specialised forms of transport-the helicopter and the hovercraft.
By far the greatest proportion of journeys made by all forms of transport are over distances of less than 100 miles, and it is precisely for this type of short-haul route that both the helicopter and the hovercraft have been developed. Each of these novel vehicles, in its own sphere, has a great future, and the design problems involved are no less satisfying in their solution than those of orbital or interplanetary space craft.
This book is an introduction to these two promising new fields of aviation. The author explains the engineering principles involved and describes the early research and experiments which have resulted in the vehicles we now know. Finally, he gives some details of present design trends and future developments which may take place in these new industries.
Young engineering and flying enthusiasts will find much to satisfy their curiosity in both parts of this book, which is illustrated with photographs, and a large number of diagrams and drawings.
Basil Arkell, an experienced helicopter test pilot, is Editor of Helicopter & Hovercraft World. In both capacities he has had occasion to make a comprehensive study of the design and engineering problems of these methods of transport. He has flown some thirty different types of rotating wing aircraft and established a helicopter world speed record for Great Britain, in 1948, with a Fairey Gyrodyne. He has also flown in a number of the latest types of air cushion vehicle. Mr. Arkell is an Associate Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society.

THE YOUNG ENGINEER SERIES
This series is part of the Young Enthusiast Library, which is designed to present an attractive library of informative books for young people from thirteen to fifteen. The intention is to provide enquiring young minds with broad outline introductions to a wide range of extra-curricula subjects in an entertaining and easily assimilable form. Each book is written by an established authority on the subject, and contains numerous line drawings as well as eight pages of photographs.
