{detailed description}This book represents an account of early American helicopter concepts and developments as revealed mainly in the words and literature of the time.
As much as feasible an interpretive approach is taken providing both explanation and factual information. This means appreciation and understanding are intimate parts of the account.
The work also seeks to define some underlying philosophy in the efforts of these pioneers.
Specifically the history covers the period from the earliest years to the emergence of the successful helicopter in the late 1930s, a total time-span of about 120 years. The oldest American ideas on record date to the early 19th century.
Over 100 investigators are accounted for with about 50 foreign entrepreneurs included to set off the American work. There were certainly more, as can be noted by a count of the patents issued during the interval. Except for special interest patents (mostly related to hardware) the information is from general, published material. A major source was the author's handbook series cited in the Preface, and since donated to the American Helicopter Society.

Contains extensive appendices competition entrants of 1924, 1925 and 1926, Patents, and modern organisations.
