{detailed description}When Igor Sikorsky perfected the first 'single-rotor' helicopter in 1939-40, he envisaged it as a means of saving and enriching life. Today we have heavily-armed and armoured helicopter gunships, and anti-submarine hunter-killers which fly from warships of every class. There are helicopters large enough to lift a 40-ton load, and small enough to be built in garages at home and then flown safely by amateur pilots. In between are the 'choppers' that carry business executives from office to factory, or deliver passengers and cargo to offshore oil rigs and city-centre rooftops. Here, too, are the headline-makers which snatch frightened people to safety from those same rooftops when buildings catch fire, or from mountain ledges or sinking ships.
