{detailed description}This work presents a comprehensive analysis of the Japanese aircraft industry and their products between the late thirties and the dawn of the nuclear age. A series of introductory chapters covers the history of the Japanese aircraft industry and of the air arms of the Imperial Japanese Army and Navy, the designation systems for Japanese military aircraft and the aircraft camouflage and marking system used by both military services.
The most significant types of aircraft operated by the Imperial Japanese Army and the Imperial Japanese Navy immediately prior to and during the Pacific War are respectively described in the two main sections of this book. Each of these aircraft is illustrated by one or more photographs and multi-view line drawings by J. B. Roberts.
A series of appendices provides information and data on less important Japanese military aircraft, foreign-designed aircraft operated by Japanese forces, aircraft carriers and tenders, aero-engines and aircraft armament. Finally a comprehensive designation index provides an immediate cross-reference to every Japanese military aircraft between 1927 and 1945.
The result of twelve years of painstaking research, this book was made possible by the co-operation of various U.S. Government agencies which gave the author access to documents confiscated after the Japanese surrender. The author also enjoyed cooperation, help and suggestions from former Japanese aircraft designers, high ranking officers and flight crews.
Revised from the first edition this edition incorporates newly available information.
