{detailed description}Andrew Healey documents the colourful history of Bristow Helicopters, which celebrates its Golden Jubilee in 2003.
Leading from the Front charts Alan Bristow's early career, from joining Westland as its first helicopter test pilot to setting up his original company, Air Whaling Ltd., to search for whales in the Antarctic.
His business expanded into oil, first in the Persian Gulf and then South America, before becoming established as a leading light in the burgeoning North Sea industry. The 1970s saw new challenges, culminating in the dramatic evacuation of employees and helicopters from post-revolutionary Iran.
Bristow's stature was confirmed with the arrival of the Tiger - a specially modified AS332 Super Puma - which arrived for the first time in 1982 and which still represents the bulk of the North Sea fleet.
Today the company still supports the oil industry around the globe, as well as providing search and rescue services around the UK coastline and training student military pilots. Also celebrating the presentation of a Queen's Award for Enterprise in 2003, it remains a world-class helicopter operation.
