{detailed description}The challenge of man powered flight has attracted the interest of aviation enthusiasts from all walks of life. There have been many attempts, some extremely successful, though of vulnerable structure. Each has served to emphasize the wide divergence of approach. Wingspans have ranged from 44 to 139 feet, empty weight from 81 lbs. to 215 lbs. and the methods of control from fully articulated surfaces to simple elevator-only. The longest recorded flight of 1355 yards by the Halton 'Jupiter' has shown the possibilities: but further success eludes the many aspirants. In this, the first textbook primarily aimed at the student of man powered flight, Dr. K. Sherwin analyses the problems of design structure and operation, adding his own theories for production of a practical 'pedal scooter'. Specially selected illustrations collected by Aeromodeller staff convey a pictorial history of progress and the combination of text, diagrams and photographs from a scientific reference work of great value to all students of aviation.
