{detailed description}Martlesham Heath, near Ipswich in Suffolk, could justly claim to be one of the cradles of British aviation. From 1917, when the R.A.F. station was opened to house the Experimental Aircraft Flight, through its golden years of the 1920s and early 1930s, until the outbreak of the Second World War, Martlesham was a testing establishment for aircraft, engines and equipment, both military and civil.
In this record of the Station, Gordon Kinsey has assembled a multitude of facts and many reminiscences of those who were involved with such machines as the Sopwith Camel, Vickers Vimy, Westland Westbury and Hawker Hurricane. He also tells of the close association with the experiments in radio-location, later to be called radar, and the various armaments and ammunition which were tested for aircraft use.
During the last war Martlesham served as an active base, both for British and American flyers. Of recent years it has been developed as an industrial complex and the runways and hangars have given way to factories and the giant new G.P.O. Research Station. But still its influence, between the wars, upon the research and development of so many different aircraft is respected and remembered with affection. The emphasis of the book is on Martlesham's role as a testing establishment.{Author / Publisher / Date}by Gordon Kinsey
