{detailed description}The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21 has been built in greater numbers than any other warplane of the period since World War II, although when it first entered service with the Soviet air forces in the late 1950s it was dismissed rather scornfully as a useful but highly limited clear-weather Interceptor. Since then it has been transformed into an extremely useful multi-role fighter, capable of limited all-weather operations. It has been given improved avionics (including radar) and much-enhanced weapons capability, while two new engine types have improved payload and performance.
Steady production has kept unit costs to a minimum and this has helped the USSR to promote the growth of Soviet influence by exporting the MiG-21 at exceptionally advantageous terms. Although slowly disappearing from the USSR's front-line inventory, the MiG-21 remains in production and seems set for many more years of fruitful service.
