{detailed description}The De Havilland D.H.98 Mosquito was arguably the most versatile military aircraft of its age. The revolutionary twin-engined wooden aircraft was originally designed as a fast intruder bomber, but the combination of speed and manoeuvrability it embodied quickly led it into a series of seemingly infinite adaptations for other tasks.
It excelled in its originally envisaged role, but it also became the pre-eminent night-fighter, an excellent photo-reconnaissance aircraft, a torpedo bomber, a ground-attacker, weather reporting aircraft and engaged in other specialist duties. In most of these guises the Mosquito went through a variety of marks that increased its performance capabilities each time. Originally rejected by the Air Ministry, if ever an aircraft embodied the spirit of persistence it was the Mosquito, fondly nicknamed 'The Wooden Wonder', which reached production figures of 8,000-plus.
In this book, Graham Simons, a self-confessed Mosquito devotee, investigates the origins, development, production, adaptation and employment of this remarkable aircraft, which constituted the RAF's, and perhaps the world's, first true 'multi-role' combat aircraft. The author has made full use of the official test reports, which have allowed him to examine the thinking and decision-making of those who continually refined and extended the design.
The book is illustrated by some 100 photographs, which cover the entire period of first and second-line service throughout the world, and over two dozen line illustrations, which explain the finer points of design structure and operational tactics.
