{detailed description}This monograph contains details of the aircraft types operated by the NATO countries (except the United Kingdom and the United States), that are most likely to be seen in the United Kingdom or the nearby European countries. France, which is not actually a full member of NATO, has been included because she still has informal ties with the organisation and takes part regularly on exercises and squadron exchanges.
Due to the limitations on size, it is not possible to have a complete listing for each country, but each year the situation is reviewed and as many types and units are included to make this title as comprehensive and useful to you the enthusiast.
Each country is listed alphabetically. This is followed by a small introduction, the units are then listed in numerical or alphabetical order.
Each unit shows the base or bases from which it operates; the aircraft type or types operated (n.b. some units do not show all types); where individual aircraft identification letter/number codes are carried, we have endeavoured to list these as comprehensively as possible; the aircraft thought to be current as of 31st March 1990 and any notes that are applicable, i.e. future changes, aircraft on order, references to other units etc..
Another section, lists the bases mentioned in this monograph in alphabetical order, showing the units which operate from them.
Finally, a list of aircraft that are in store, on overhaul, recently or about to be delivered or the whereabouts is uncertain or for which it has not been possible to include the unit.
Note: Where it has been impossible to identify an operating unit for certain types of aircraft, the individual units have been noted in the normal way with just one of these units containing details of all the known aircraft.
