{detailed description}The name of North American stands in the forefront of the US aerospace industry. For much of its history, since the company began to make aeroplanes 40 years ago, North American has specialised in military aircraft, for the US armed forces and for export. Its output includes such famous types as the NA-16 Harvard and Texan family, the Mustang, the Mitchell, the Sabre and the Super Sabre. Maintaining a lead in advanced technology, it has gone on to exotic research aircraft like the X-15 and the B-70 and is to- day building the free world's most advanced strategic bomber, the swing-wing B-I. Thanks to a merger with the Rockwell Corporation, North American has also made a significant entry into the general aviation field with a range of light aircraft, executive twins, business jets and agricultural aircraft. The whole diverse range of North American Rockwell aircraft types is concisely described and handsomely illustrated in this survey by one of the world's foremost aerospace historians.
