{detailed description}On Wings of War: My life as a pilot adventurer by Jean Zumbach (published under the French name Jean, Zumbach was born in Poland as Jan Zumbach) Originally published in French in 1973 as "Mr. Brown" this edition translated by Steve Cox.

Here in his own words is the extraordinary life story of the crack pilot and mercenary whose unquenchable thirst for adventure has taken him to all parts of the world on an unparalleled variety of dangerous missions. Born in Poland but preferring to think of himself as without nationality — the Africans called him simply 'Mister Brown' — Jean Zumbach spent the Second World War in the RAF, where he scored many notable successes in the air. The immediate post-war years were taken up with high-risk dealings in contraband (gold, cigarettes, diamonds and penicillin were his precious cargoes) but soon he was back at war again — this time in the Congo, flying for Tshombe. Next came Biafra, where he worked closely with Colonel Ojukwu and where his creation of a Biafran Air Force, combined with his own expertise and personal bravery, made a major contribution to the Biafran war. In between times, he took on numerous smuggling operations and daring escapades, in the air, on land and at sea, all of which are described in hair-raising detail.
This is the epic story of a life lived for adventure. It will be an irresistible read for anyone who is excited by the often brutal but always romantic appeal of war in the air.
