{detailed description}After leaving school John Silvester had a brief spell in the hydraulic engineering industry before joining Percival Aircraft Ltd in 1937 as a draughtsman at their Luton factory. When the company was awarded Government contracts which required extensive documentation he was seconded to an embryo publications department on a part-time basis to provide technical illustrations, and to undertake a variety of tasks associated with that discipline. At the end of the war, after a short period with the de Havilland Aircraft Company, he returned to Percival Aircraft Ltd as a Senior Illustrator, and eventually became the Studio Manager.
Having spent twenty three years in the aircraft industry he could see that the 1960s would not be advantageous for small aircraft manufacturers - or indeed the aircraft industry in general - and wishing to remain within the Hunting Group of companies he joined Hunting Engineering Ltd, a newly formed weapons research establishment, as the Chief Technical Publisher and Head of Department.
As a lifelong aeroplane enthusiast John illustrated many articles and books by R.J. Moulton the one-time Editor of Aeromodeller. He was a member of the Royal Aeronautical Society and a Founder Member of the Institute of Technical Publications and Publicity, now the Institute of Scientific and Technical Communicators, of which he was a Fellow until his retirement.
This authoritive and long awaited history, illustrated as it is with the author's unique collection of official photographs, will be of absorbing interest to all aviation enthusiasts.
