{detailed description}THE ARCHIVE PHOTOGRAPHS SERIES One of a series of paperback books using period photographs to chart a company's history.
This book contains a collection of over 200 photographs of aircraft designed and built by Percival Aircraft Ltd, one of the two leading British producers of what are now categorised as 'General Aviation' aircraft. The company flourished and grew in size as a consequence of the huge growth in aviation just before the Second World War. After contributing to the war effort, building aircraft from trainers to bombers, it then enjoyed a period of prosperity for almost twenty years. Later known as Hunting-Percival Aircraft Ltd, it was amalgamated into the British Aircraft Corporation during the reorganisation (or 'downsizing', as it would now be known) of the UK aircraft industry in the late 1950s. It was then completely eliminated in the aftermath of the cancellation of major aircraft programmes of the 1960s. The author served his aeronautical apprenticeship at Percivals from 1948 to 1953 and, after National Service in the Royal Navy Air Arm, his subsequent aviation career took him into four other British aircraft companies before he emigrated to America. He retired from Boeing Commercial Airplane Company in Seattle in 1995. He is an active sailplane (glider) pilot and currently holds an International Gold Badge, with one Diamond.
