{detailed description}All aircraft are, in one sense or another, 'working' aircraft, and although the types described' in this volume have less of the limelight than jumbo jets and supersonic fighters, they are none the less important; indeed, numerically they account for a high proportion of the world's aeroplane 'population'. Occasionally they too achieve national prominence—there can be few people who have not heard, for instance, of Sheila Scott's or Max Conrad's endurance flights in the Piper Comanche, or about the 'flying doctor' air ambulances in Australia and elsewhere.
The 8o aircraft illustrated here, differing as widely in their size as in the diversity of their employment, are shown in colour in their three major aspects—side elevation, plan view from above and plan view from below—and so combine the maximum visual appeal with essential details of construction and the livery of a typical owner or operator. The accompanying text describes each aeroplane's development and career.
The author, Kenneth Munson, has specialised for many years in the study of aircraft, and has written several books on aviation, both civil and military. The principal artist, John Wood, is known as an illustrator of standard reference works on aircraft, and is also a recognised artist for the British Interplanetary Society.
This is the first book ever to present aircraft in these categories in colour, and combines accurate illustrations with an authoritative and topical text.
