{detailed description}This successor to The R.A.F. in Action, of which many thousands of copies have been sold, continues the great story of the Royal Air Force through the second year of the war. Emphasis is on Bombers-on the new Whitleys and Halifaxes, Stirlings and Fortresses, and the men who fight in them.
Bomber crews are seen at their " briefing " before a raid, and at their posts in the aircraft, and there are photographs taken on offensive operations over occupied and enemy territory. The R.A.F. is seen in Russia and in Iceland, Fighter Command's fighter-bombers are included, and illustrations of night-fighters. The work of Coastal Command becomes clear in operational pictures of Catalinas, Sunderlands, Liberators, Ansons. In the Middle East there are attacks on German aerodromes in Crete, on Libya, Sicily and the Italian mainland. Less well known are the development of Army co-operation, the achievements of the R.A.F. rescue launches, the impressive growth of the Empire Training Scheme, the increased scope of the work of the W.A.A.F.-all these have a place in this book.
