{detailed description}World War Two Aircraft Fact Files
In contrast with the evolution of fighters, which proceeded apace throughout the war, bomber development in Britain slowed down after 1942 and although some effort was put into the production of new "heavies" such as the Avro Lincoln and the Vickers-Armstrongs Windsor, Bomber Command's war was fought largely with aircraft that were already on the drawing board, if not in the air, by1939. The only significant exceptions were the remarkable unarmed Mosquito, which the de Havilland company produced in 1940 in the face of widely-held contemporary views on bomber requirements, and the Lancaster, which Avro evolved at short notice in 1941 by marrying Merlin engines to the Manchester airframe. Both these initiatives proved to be inspired, producing aircraft that were, in their class, the finest of any used in World War II.
The stories of both these bombers, and some of their contemporaries (including the Armstrong Whitworth, Whitley and Bristol Blenheim) are told in this volume; Part Two covers the bombers produced by Fairey, Handley Page, Short and Vickers.
