{detailed description}Towards the end of 1943, with plans afoot to invade mainland Europe, British resources were reorganised: RAF Fighter Command was retitled 'Air Defence Great Britain' while other units were grouped together to form a powerful new offensive air arm, named '2nd Tactical Air Force'.
The continual quest for dominance in the air saw new versions of the Spitfire (with Griffon engines), Mosquito and Mustang coming into service in 1944, plus the new Tempest and the first allied jet, the Meteor. All were to play their part, either offensively or by helping to fend off new threats, like the Fw 190 hit-and-run raiders, and the V-1 flying bombs.
After D-day, 2nd TAF units were quick to move into temporary airfields on the mainland, to support the army in its slog across Europe. The Luftwaffe were on the defensive, but fought on and were still capable of surprises - fielding the first operational jets (Me 262s) in April 1944 -and launching the audacious Operation Bodenplatte on the very first day of 1945.
The famous name of RAF Fighter Command was re-born in October 1944, though the final 16 months leading up to the cessation of war in Europe were very costly for the RAF 'fighters', in that they sustained almost a further 2,500 losses. Volumes 1 & 2 of RAF Fighter Command Losses met wide acclaim and established the series as an authoritative reference source in a similar manner to Midland's series on RAF Bomber Command Losses.
This work continues where Vol. 2 left off, recording the operational losses on a daily basis, identifying the units, crews and the aircraft type, also the service serial number and code letters, where known. Eighty-two illustrations accompany the loss details and the Appendices include several Orders of Battle for Air Defence Great Britain, the 2nd Tactical Air Force and the re-born Fighter Command. There are also amendments and additions to the earlier volumes in the series.
