As with other Aircraft Fact Files in this series, the criterion for inclusion is that the aircraft should either have been in operational service during the period of World War II, or that it should have reached the stage of flight testing by the time the war ended. Part One of this two-part Fact File covers the fighters of Boulton Paul, Bristol, de Havilland and Gloster and includes, with one exception (the Westland Whirlwind), all the multi-seat and multi-engined fighters that reached operational service - the Defiant, Blenheim, Beaufighter and Mosquito. Also included in this volume are details of the RAF's first two jet fighters - the Gloster Meteor and de Havilland Vampire. The Meteor was in service - albeit on only a limited scale - before the war ended, whereas the Vampire was still in the final stages of development, but both were to achieve large-scale production in post-war years. Both were products of the intensive design, development and production effort mounted by the British aircraft industry in the years immediately before and during the war to ensure that the RAF would continue to have fighting aircraft as good as the world's best.
