{detailed description}Formed on 1st April 1918 from the merger between the Royal Naval Air Service and the Royal Flying Corps, the Royal Air Force was the first fully autonomous military air arm in the world. The new service suffered from budget cut-backs between the two world wars, but nonetheless evolved sound organisational and operational doctrine that were to stand it in good stead in the conflict ahead. Fortunately, in its essentials, the RAF's belief in strategic air power was shared by its future operating partner; the United States Army Air Force; but not by their opponent, the Luftwaffe, which was primarily modelled on the need to support a fast moving army. Although the RAF entered the war with largely inadequate aircraft, many of them obsolescent, deliveries were starting of a new generation of aircraft which would themselves become legends - including the Spitfire and Hurricane, and latterly the Lancaster and Mosquito. RAF Handbook1939-1945 is a comprehensive, single source reference on the RAF and the vital part it played in the Second World War. David Wragg looks at the structure of the RAF, from the Air Ministry and Chief of the Air Staff down to squadron level. The main aircraft types used are described and a full listing of squadrons and airfields in the British Isles is given. Also covered are the trajning of personnel, uniforms, rank insignia, medals, life on a typical airfield and the main battles and campaigns in which the Service was involved.
