{detailed description}Formed on 1st April 1918 from the merger between the Royal Naval Air Service and the Royal Flying Corps, the Royal Air Force was the first fully autonomous military air arm in the world. The new service suffered from budget cut-backs between the two world wars, but nonetheless evolved sound organisational and operational doctrine that were to stand it in good stead in the conflict ahead. Fortunately, in its essentials, the RAF's belief in strategic air power was shared by its future operating partner; the United States Army Air Force; but not by their opponent, the Luftwaffe, which was primarily modelled on the need to support a fast moving army. Although the RAF entered the war with largely inadequate aircraft, many of them obsolescent, deliveries were starting of a new generation of aircraft which would themselves become legends - including the Spitfire and Hurricane, and latterly the Lancaster and Mosquito.
