{detailed description}This book is essentially a collection of 134 photographs, plus some full-colour paintings, illustrating the ten distinct basic types of jet fighter aircraft with which the Royal Air Force has been progressively equipped since the advent of the jet combat aircraft in 1944.
The ten types depicted include fighter-bombers and fighter/strike-reconnaissance aircraft (but not two-seat trainer variants) and the over-riding aim has been to present a selection of interesting, good-quality photographs taken from as many angles as possible and at the same time produce a pleasing layout.
The aircraft are presented chronologically by date of entry into service of the initial RAF version, but the various versions and marks of each basic type have been mixed. It will also be noticed that the two most recent types have been given relatively little coverage, but again this has been done deliberately in order to devote more space to some of the early types which do, after all, merit it nowadays when photographs are becoming increasingly difficult to obtain.
A large number of the photographs up to and including the Javelin are the work of such master craftsmen as Russell Adams, Mick Chase and Cyril Peckham, and to them and the many others who have helped to make this book possible—particularly Christopher Cole, John Bennett, R. Wellard and Mrs E. Roy of the Ministry of Defence —the compiler extends his gratitude. – PJRM
