{detailed description}This is the first full-length illustrated history of one of the great aviation corporations of the world. From early biplanes to the NASA lunar module, it charts the aircraft developed and manufactured by a firm whose activities literally span the seas, the skies - and space.
For half a century, Grumman has been a major supplier of aircraft to the US Navy, especially of fighters. Formed in 1929, the Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation began life manufacturing seaplane floats; this led to the FF-1 two-seat fighter, the first US Navy aircraft with a retractable undercarriage, and a family of fighter biplanes followed. In 1937 the Goose, a twin-engined amphibian, was launched; this was the first of the Grumman amphibians to see wide spread military and civilian service.
The F4F Wildcat was the first of a long line of 'feline' fighters, named after members of the cat family. During World War Two, the F6F Hellcat was produced in large numbers to fight in the Pacific; and after the war, Grumman began a line of jet fighters that led, via the immensely successful F9F Panther and Cougar to the mighty F-14 Tomcat of today. By 1969, Grumman had built more than 25,000 aircraft; and in that year, the crowning achievement of 40 years research, development and manufacturing, Grumman's lunar module Eagle set down two astronauts on the surface of the Moon.
In this superbly illustrated volume, M. J. Hardy presents a complete history of Grumman aircraft and aerospace activities, setting each major step forward in its historical perspective.
