{detailed description}THE ARCHIVE PHOTOGRAPHS SERIES One of a series of paperback books using period photographs to chart a company's history.
Shorts is the oldest aircraft manufacturer in the world still to be operating under its original name, almost ninety years after it was founded. Throughout the First World War large numbers of seaplanes and later flying boats were delivered to the Royal Navy, and in the Second World War the company produced Sunderland flying boats and Stirling bombers for the RAF.
Between the wars, Shorts made a name for itself with large flying boats, both military and civil, culminating in the luxurious Empire Flying Boats which introduced a new era of passenger comfort. After the last war, a number of Sunderlands were converted for civilian use, but the new four-engined landplanes put a stop to the flying boat era. Peace brought a variety of new types from experimental aircraft to jet bomber, from utility transport to turboprop trainer, and now Shorts, having manufactured their last complete aircraft, are heavily engaged in large component manufacture for a number of companies as part of the Canadian Bombardier Group, in addition to work for such companies as Fokker, Boeing and Lockheed. This collection of well over 200 stunning old photographs tells the remarkable history of this famous company.
