{detailed description}Short Brothers, Horace, Eustace and Oswald, became the world's first aircraft manufacturers in 1909 when they began building Wright Brothers' designs under contract. But it was Sir Arthur Gouge who designed the long line of between-the-wars flying boats that achieved both civil and military fame, culminating in the Empire and Sunderland. In more recent years the firm produced Britain's first VTOL aircraft and is still a major manufacturer and sub-contractor in the aerospace industry.
