{detailed description}The modern Soviet helicopter industry owes its present shape to the formation of the Mil and Kamov design bureaux soon after the Second World War. The result was an unbroken flow of efficient and capable helicopters which continues to the present day. World records had been broken by the mid-1950s, and a Mil design had claimed the title of world's largest helicopter. In the subsequent 35 years Soviet designers have equalled and sometimes bettered their Western counterparts as helicopters have grown in capability, challenging fixed-wing types as short-haul passenger and cargo-lifters and low-level combat aircraft.
The first edition of this book was the first comprehensive account of the development of Soviet helicopters and autogiros. This expanded and completely updated new edition contains details of the highly publicised Mi-24 'Hind'. the massive Mi-26 'Halo', and the brand-new Soviet designs which have seen service in Afghanistan, Angola and Nicaragua, 'Havoc', `Kamov' Hokum' and Mi-34 'Hermit'. It also treats in depth the evolution of Soviet helicopter tactics; the process by which designs move from concept to production and service; and the philosophy that underpins helicopter design in the Soviet Union.
Since the first edition appeared in 1983 there has been no slackening of the Soviet helicopter development effort. New types have appeared, older designs have acquired new roles, and experimentation with tactics, techniques and procedures has been continuous. Much fresh information on these and earlier developments has become available from a variety of sources, and it has all been incorporated into this edition.
Supporting the main text are photographs, line drawings. appendices, a glossary, a select bibliography, data tables comparing Soviet types and their Western equivalents, and brief biographies of the men who have shaped the course of rotary-wing development in the USSR.
