{detailed description}Squadron Codes — an essential reference book — provides a quick and accurate guide to the squadrons and units of the Royal Air Force.
For the first time a complete list of aircraft markings has been compiled thanks to the efforts of enthusiasts who made notes at a time when the identity of a newly observed set of code letters was cloaked in secrecy. The authors have recorded this unique information here for posterity before all evidence and memory have disappeared.
The main section of the book deals with the new range of unit identity letters which were applied to operational aircraft at the beginning of World War 2. Pre-war codes are also included along with the markings of Commonwealth and English-based USAAF units and the final section serves as an index to letters which are listed against units to which they were allocated.
The book is based on the long-running and immensely popular series of articles with the same title which appeared in Airfix Magazine between 1973 and 1979, extensively revised and supplemented as a result of new information received from readers, many of them former aircrew, and contains a large number of fresh photographs. The entries have been specially arranged and indexed in such a way that a particular code or squadron can be looked up in seconds. It is thus an essential addition to the libraries of all aeroplane spotters and historians, both amateur and professional.
