{detailed description}This is the author's third book for the thematic stamp collector and is the natural successor to Stamps and Ships and Stamps and Railways. The story of flight, particularly the development of the aeroplane, is of comparatively recent origin, but stamps depict man's attempts to fly with bird-like wings and primitive balloons long before the Wright brothers and other pioneers built their first aircraft.
Stamps and Aircraft records the stamps and relates the adventures of the first aeronauts and their bizarre machines, and introduces the reader to the first powered aeroplanes, airships and zeppelins, seaplanes and flying-boats of the first part of the present century. The epic flights of Blériot, Alcock and Brown, Lindbergh and many other famous fliers are described, and there are chapters about the fighters and bombers of the world's air forces, autogyros and helicopters, light planes and gliders, and the latest jet giants, with an account of some of the leading airlines and airports. The extraordinary flights of the Soviet rockets and satellites are recorded in detail, and there is a comprehensive index which lists all the worthwhile aircraft stamps under country names.
