{detailed description}Beginning with his appointment as an Intelligence Officer on the Air Staff in 1939, the author describes his work in various branches of our intelligence services, which involved him in some very unexpected activities for a R.A.F. officer. The many strange encounters included the examination of shot down enemy aircraft; interrogation of Luftwaffe prisoners in France and Belgium and liaison with the French Armée de I'Air. The last British officer to leave Brussels, he was able to keep ahead of the German advance and saw the Fall of France at first hand.
He describes the work of picking up the pieces during the Battle of Britain, which contributed to the achievement of Dr R. V. Jones and other scientists in countering the bombing offensive and the attacks of V.1 and V.2. For a short time he was at the centre of our intelligence organisation in Hut 3 at Bletchley Park, working on the product of Enigma. His next assignment was as Air Staff Intelligence representative to the BBC, where he organised for over two years a daily propaganda broadcast from the R.A.F. to the Luftwaffe. Once victory was in sight he was appointed lecturer at the Control Commission School (Air) training officers for the government of Germany and the take-over of the Luftwaffe. This led to two years of scientific and technical intelligence work in Germany, with Kim Philby and the fate Airey Neave, culminating with a visit to the Major War Criminals' Trial at Nuremberg and his interrogation of Albert Speer.
Wing Commander Peskett's varied adventures from 1939 to the end of 1946 gave him a unique opportunity to observe our fortunes from lowest ebb to final victory and amply justify his title of Strange Intelligence.
