{detailed description}This is the third (and last) volume in the trilogy about aviation in the 1950's. Peter Campbell has found no shortage of volunteers willing to write about their memories of that period. In this final book, thirty-four different authors have participated.
As with the two previous instalments, there is a diverse mix of subject matter and styles, ranging from the technical through the factual and descriptive to the downright humorous - and even poetic. Apart from a number of chapters by those who flew light aircraft at the time, there are several contributions by erstwhile aircraft "spotters" (whose ends were achieved with the aid of a bicycle in those far off days, it seems); there is also a fascinating selection about aspects of flying with the services (RAF, Army and Navy). Other subjects include test flying, ballooning and the recollections of an airline stewardess with BOAC.
Feedback from readers of the two previous volumes "Tails of the Fifties" and "More Tails of the Fifties" has indicated that, apart from being very handy for propping up wonky tables, they are equally well suited for reading from end to end if you have a couple of days to spare, or for "dipping into" a chapter at a time.
The editor's intention is that these three volumes, taken together, will provide an eminently readable account of aviation developments during the immediate post-war period. Also, because of the many personal details provided by the authors - who were actively involved in aviation at that time in one capacity or another - it is hoped that these works will continue to be useful, both for reference and enjoyment, in the years to come.
